NEUROVASCULAR TREATMENTS

Embolization of Brain Aneurysms

Treatment of brain aneurysms can now be performed by a minimally invasive procedure that accesses the area to be treated from within the blood vessel itself. This treatment is called coil embolization or “coiling”. Coiling doesn’t require open surgery, but the procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia to keep the patient comfortable as it may take two to three hours to complete.

During coil embolization tiny, soft, platinum coils are placed within a delicate and prone to bleed brain aneurysm in order to relieve pressure from circulating blood on the walls of the aneurysm and to prevent rupture. The coils are guided to the aneurysm through the use of a catheter inserted into the femoral artery at the top of the leg. Through the use of sophisticated radiologic monitors, and 3D imaging, the coils are advanced to the aneurysm and positioned accurately to block blood flow. Filling the aneurysm with coils reduces the chance of the aneurysm leaking or rupturing.

Endovascular therapy for intracranial aneurysm offers a less invasive alternative to surgery for most patients and is particularly helpful to patients with difficult-to-reach aneurysms at surgery. Using detachable coils to close off the aneurysm from the “inside of the aneurysm” is effective in prolonging life and relieving symptoms.

Key Advantages:

  • Minimally invasive
  • Lower risk of complications
  • Minimal blood loss
  • Shorter recovery time
