The diagnosis and evaluation of a a vascular problem require a complete history and physical examination by an experienced clinician.

The vascular surgeon or interventional radiologist you see will have you fill out a form with your vascular complaints and entire medical history, medications you take, other doctors you see, and past history of hospitalizations and surgery. .

Based on history and physical examination, a skilled physcian will have a fairly good idea of the nature of your problem. Then, certain diagnostic tests may be needed to help refine and further detail the clinical impression.

Many of these tests are completely non-invasive and include ultrasound imaging of the arteries and veins, blood pressure measurements in the legs before and after exercise, and analysis of flow and pressure waves in the legs by a PVR test.

Depending on the outcome of these non-invasive tests and your history and physical examination, you may then need to undergo more complex imaging studies, particularly if a procedure is being contemplated.
