Nephrostomy and Nephroureteral Stent Placement
Nephrostomy

Nephrostomy is a procedure where the radiologist uses ultrasound guidance to insert a catheter through skin into kidney blocked by a stone or other reason to drain urine. The radiologist will use the ultrasound machine and the x-ray equipment to locate the most suitable position for inserting a small catheter into the kidney from the back. This procedure is performed under local anesthesia and/or intravenous sedation. Once in place, the catheter is connected to a urine collecting bag which can be hidden under the clothes until the catheter can be removed.
