GI & GU INTERVENTIONS
Percutaneous Stone Removal from the Biliary Tract
|
On rare occasions gallstones may be left behind after gallbladder surgery. Percutaneous stone removal from the biliary tract is generally performed in these circumstances by an interventional radiologist five to six weeks after the removal of a gallbladder and placement of a T-tube (drainage tube) by a surgeon. Once the tract is matured, a guidewire is inserted into the bile duct and the T-tube is removed. A sheath is then passed over the guidewire, and a basket or snare device is inserted through the sheath to retrieve the stones and pull them out of the body.
Key Advantages:
- Can eliminate the need for a second surgery
- Performed on an outpatient basis
