Doctor Kwass received his A.B. from Amherst College in Amherst, Massachusetts in 1962. He then attended New York University School of Medicine in New York City, earning his medical degree in 1966.He completed his Internship and Residency in Surgery and a fellowship in Vascular Surgery at Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts.

Doctor Kwass is a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery. He was certified in General Surgery in 1975 and received subsequent certification in Vascular Surgery in 1987 was recertified in 1997. He also an attending surgeon at both Yale-New Haven Hospital and the Hospital of St Raphael in New Haven, Connecticut since 1974. He also has been an attending surgeon at Milford Hospital and at Griffin Hospital in Derby, Connecticut.

At the Hospital of St Raphael, Doctor Kwass worked as Quality Assurance Coordinator for the Department of Surgery from 1989 to 1997. He then became Chief of the Vascular Surgery section in 1998. He also held the title of Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery from 1977 to 2002 at the Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut. He organized the vascular teaching program for surgical residents at the Hospital of Saint Raphael and was elected Attending of the Year by the surgical residents there in 2000.

In addition to a practice that includes the full spectrum of peripheral artery disease management and surgery, Doctor Kwass has a career-long interest in all aspects of the treatment of varicose and spider veins, including minimally invasive surgeries such as VNUS closure and endovenous laser ablation, sclerotherapy, ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy, ambulatory phlebectomy and the management of chronic venous insufficiency and venous ulcers.

Some of the projects and services Doctor Kwass has worked on include quality improvement and length of stay projects for carotid endarterectomy, aortic surgery, and complex lower extremity bypass. He has been a promoter of the “vascular center” concept for multi-specialty treatment of vascular disease in order to provide a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to vascular patients through the merger of interventional radiology and traditional open vascular surgery. He was also a driving force in establishing a Vascular Care Unit at the Hospital of St Raphael, a four-bed-step-down ICU for the post-operative care of patients having carotid endarterectomy or lower extremity revascularization procedures.

Doctor Kwass maintains an active interest interest in vascular ultrasound and the vascular laboratory for non- invasive diagnosis. He has experience in ultrasound scanning since 1985, including both performance and interpretation of procedures. He introduced intraoperative duplex ultrasound to the Operating Room at the Hospital of St Raphael in 1996.






Doctor Kwass is a founding member of Connecticut EndoVascular Specialists, recently established in 2005. The Group currently operates at the Hospital of St Raphael in New Haven, Connecticut.

Doctor Kwass has several publications on vascular subjects and is a member of the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS), New England Society for Vascular Surgery, Eastern Vascular Society, Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery and International Society of Endovascular Specialists. He is also a fellow of American College of Surgeons.
