Doctor Berkmen graduated from the Istanbul University School of Medicine in Istanbul
Turkey in 1989. He then completed his first residency in Radiology at the Istanbul University Cerrahpasa School of Medicine in 1993. After graduation, he performed a chest radiology fellowship in Columbia Presbyterian Hospital at the Columbia University School of Medicine in New York, New York in 1993.
Doctor Berkmen then returned to Turkey where he was appointed as an Attending Radiologist at the well known Megamar imaging center in Istanbul Turkey from 1994 to 1995. During that time he not only clinically practiced, but published articles in the world wide literature. Desiring to acquire credentials in the United States, he moved back to the US to complete with distinction a second residency in Radiology at the Hospital of St Raphael, one of Yale University School of Medicine’s teaching hospitals.. During this four year period, Dr Berkmen achieved three major academic awards, the Medical Staff President’s Award for Excellence in Academic Performance for two consecutive years and the Solomon Schwartz Resident of the Year Award. He became the Chief Radiology Resident at the Hospital of St Raphael Radiology during his senior year.
Doctor Berkmen’s subspecialty training then began with one year fellowship in Vascular/Interventional Radiology at the Jackson Memorial Hospital, University Miami School of Medicine, Miami, Florida in 2000. This was followed by another year of fellowship in Cross Sectional Imaging back at the Hospital of St Raphael in New Haven CT. Dr Berkmen concluded his final year of fellowship in Endovascular/Surgical/Interventional Neuroradiology at the Jackson Memorial Hospital, University of Miami School of Medicine, Miami, Florida in 2002. Here he was trained in, and helped develop, techniques to treat intracranial aneurysms and atherosclerosis etc. by minimally invasive non-surgical techniques.
In 2002, after this extensive period of training and experience, Doctor Berkmen returned to Connecticut as the Director of Interventional Neuroradiology at the Hospital of St Raphael in New Haven, Ct. In 2006, he was appointed as a Clinical Instructor at the Yale University Department of Radiology, and also serves as a clinical consultant in Interventional Neuroradiology at the St. Francis Hospital near Hartford, Ct.
Doctor Berkmen was certified by the American Board of Radiology in 1999. He is a member of the American College of Radiology, Society of Vascular Interventional Radiology (SVIR) and American Society of Interventional Neuroradiology (ASITN) and the State of Ct. Medical Society as well as the local county medical society.
Doctor Berkmen’s special interests continue to be minimally invasive treatments related to diseases of the brain and spine, but because of his broad training, he performs a full range of non neuro-related interventional procedures as well.

Doctor Berkmen and his colleagues currently operate at the Hospital of St Raphael in New Haven, Connecticut. He is a founding member of Connecticut EndoVascular, which was established in 2005.
